Durban Barrels

With offshore winds and plenty of swell on the forecast, we opted to head south in search of long, reeling right-handers. The area 120 kilometres south of our abode is known for consistent swell, big sharks and perfect point breaks, making it the ideal option for a day mission. Eager to capitalise on the stellar surf-report, we took off early, leaving before sunrise. Our first spot-check was underwhelming — the sandbar wasn’t quite right and the swell was a little too east. We continued our search, confident that one of the numerous world-class setups in the area would provide. Eventually, after an hour of unsuccessful searching, we decided to head back north, making a risky decision to take a look at a sandpit that usually only works in summer. We arrived to superb, three to four foot waves breaking with mechanical precision. The sand-spit was as good as it had been all year and the boys scrambled to throw on their wetsuits. One of the Skunks was sick on this particular morning, taking up an unfamiliar position behind the lens. Here he thrived as videographer/coach, growing in confidence with each wave. We hope you enjoy the waves and commentary, as one brother cheers on another.
