Introducing Skunk Aversion Surf Safaris – A luxury African surf experience created to guide you through the best of what the continent, and its waves, has to offer. We provide a unique, authentic and exclusive experience, offering premium surf safaris tailored to your needs. We do this by selecting the finest lodgings in the most magnificent locations along our wave rich coast. And the waves? In truth, the waves absolutely pump and we’re confident they’re up there with the best in the world, but it’s neither simple nor straightforward scoring them. You’ve got to know where you’re going and what you’re doing. This isn’t Bali after all, and there ain’t no road signs to Uluwatu. Luckily for you, that’s where we come in. Two men with more than thirty years of combined experience surfing and exploring this glorious stretch of coast and a wealth of knowledge fashioned to finding its premiere waves. We’ve put time and money into finding perfect waves and uncrowded lineups, locating every imaginable setup along the East coast of Southern Africa. With a plethora of surf-spots up our sleeve, both known and secret, and an in-depth understanding of the local charts, we can put you on the best waves with the fewest people.
The inspiration came back in July 2023. We’d always known that our stretch of coast was unique – a pot of gold nestled on the east coast of Southern Africa – but it took a group of foreign frothers to open our eyes to the true wonders of the African surf experience. We met our foreign counterparts in Indonesia while working as surf guides in the Mentawai’s. Connecting over a shared love of surfing and surf-exploration, a friendship was born, and we began to share tales of the empty point breaks and barreling beachies that litter our homeland. The opportunity to see it for themselves, they decided, was too enticing to pass up – the waves too empty, the point breaks too perfect, and the wildlife too awe-inspiring. They were sold, cancelling prior plans and penciling in a month of ‘sick leave’ in preparation for a trip to surfing’s final frontier.
It was a week into this journey, when we were struck by the superiority of the African surf experience. We stood overlooking point break perfection at spot redacted, watching endless lines refusing to relent as they marched toward the shore. The offshore breeze puffed as we looked around, scanning our lush, secluded surroundings for sign of a crowd. Our American guests were shocked to see no one in sight – amazed that a wave of such quality would be ours and ours alone. ‘Where else in the world,’ someone exclaimed, articulating our exact thoughts. As we sat in the lineup, the enigmatic magic of the country shone through: looking onto an informal settlement and the lush surrounding hills an hour from suburbia, riding some of the most enjoyable waves you can find, with warm water, balmy weather, and no surfers in sight. We soaked up every ounce of surf that morning, basking in the glory of the day and the place. We continued on our journey, scoring at every stop on our tour of the east coast, and our guests, blown away by the country, couldn’t help but comment on the unbelievably empty line-ups, incredible wave quality and amazing natural beauty. Beyond that, they spoke at length about their safari experience – sharing their amazement at the opportunity to see the big five up close and personal.
The trip was an overwhelming success, inspiring us to incorporate Southern Africa’s most memorable attributes into our exclusive African surf adventure. Whether it’s cooking waves, crowdless lineups, or an exclusive big five safari you’re after, rest assured, we’ve got you covered.
